Massage Therapy

Since 3000 B.C., Chinese literature shows that they used massage in their daily routines, because it was believed that massage benefited their way of life. Around 300 B.C., the Greeks gave their soldiers daily massages to ease pain during their training and tournaments.

Today, massage therapy is known for its combination of techniques and science. It can be preventative or restorative, helping to maintain, rehabilitate, augment physical function and relieve pain. Massage can also help alleviate soft tissue discomfort associated with everyday stress, muscular overuse and many chronic syndromes.

Massage therapy can be beneficial for a range of conditions, including:

  • Sports injuries
  • Sprains and strains
  • Muscle spasms and tension
  • Back, leg, and neck pain
  • Fractures and dislocations
  • Arthritis and bursitis
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Tendinitis
  • Headaches
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Stress and stress related conditions
  • Pregnancy
  • Stroke
  • Post-surgical rehabilitation

Some examples of benefits that Massage Therapy has to offer are:

  • Reducing or eliminating pain
  • Improving joint mobility, circulation, and immune system functioning
  • Reducing depression, anxiety, tension within the muscles
  • Increasing body awareness

Effleurage (gliding strokes), petrissage (lifting and kneading), and percussion are some hands-on techniques that are used during a massage. The benefits on these hands-on techniques stretch and loosen connective tissues and muscles, assists the action of joints, and increases function and range of motion.

Massage therapy is often combined with physiotherapy, chiropractic or acupuncture, to ensure durable outcomes. Other techniques that may be used during massage therapy are:

  • Hydrotherapy (cold/hot therapy)
  • Trigger point therapy
  • Deep tissue therapy
  • Myofascial therapy (connective tissue work)
  • Rhythmic mobilizations
  • Craniosacral therapy
  • Remedial exercises
